Real Estate Article: What Is Flood Insurance? If the home you want to purchase is in a flood hazard area, you will have to purchase flood insurance. This is in addition to your Homeowners Policy and is purchased through the Federal Government Flood Insurance Program. Most Insurance Agents will tell you where to go to purchase flood insurance. Every property is in a flood zone! But only a few are in hazard areas. If a home is in a hazard area, the lender will even require flood insurance. As we have seen with recent disasters, many flood maps are badly out of date. Therefore, if you even remotely think that the home might be in a flood area, you should purchase flood insurance. If the maps are out of date and the property is not in the hazard area, you will be able to purchase flood insurance at a very low cost. |
